A Conspiracy of Paper : A Novel > Customer Review #1:
A Fascinating Historical Mystery

A historical novel is a wonderful way to learn about the past, and A Conspiracy of Paper most certainly fits that bill. David Liss did a great job of not letting plot suffer so he could develop historical detail, or vice versa. All of the characters were very well developed, and the plot moved along quickly with surprises around many a corner. I found the relationships between the characters to be real and interesting, and learned so many quirky little details from reading this novel -- about boxing, the beginnings of the stock market, even the origins of the phrase "to double cross someone." Ive seen many comparisons to Caleb Carr, and I suppose that they make sense -- chances are that if you enjoyed The Alienist or The Angel of Darkness, youll like A Conspiracy of Paper. An informative and enjoyable read -- it will be difficult to put the book down until you know who Mr. Rochester is!

A Conspiracy of Paper : A Novel > Customer Review #2:
ultimately disappointing

On one level, this book is great fun - Lisss world has gone mad for speculative profits, and the established order of wealth and power is under threat from new groups pushing in and upwards; the parallels to todays economy are telegraphed loudly and its enjoyable to read about the beginnings of the financial world we all live in today. Liss has done his homework (hes a history grad student, after all) and the details of 18th century life are admirably realized.

And yet - as a mystery the plot is inexorably bogged down by the endless explanations of how the financial markets work, and of the rivalry between the Bank of England and the S.Sea company.

Moreover, Lisss characters are clearly devices. Neither the heros dissolute surgeon friend nor his rebellious love interest ever emerge as anything more than schematic figures - you feel they are cut and pasted from some catalogue of stock 18th c. figures. The same is true for nearly every character other than the powerful hero, who, although he is made to seem myopic at times, we never really fear for.

In brief, an A+ for history, a C as novel - youll never find yourself breathlessly turning the pages of this one!

A Conspiracy of Paper : A Novel > Customer Review #3:
Good, but not great, tale of the past

I had high hopes for this book. These days I rarely read fiction, and when I do, its usually because it is blending fictional characters with actual events. This book does a capable job of this, but I just wish there was a little more to it.

Liss certainly gets off to a rousing start and the novel is fairly intriguing most of the way. But it just seems to gradually lose steam as it moves along, particularly as the main character, Ben Weaver, just seems to become less interesting as things progress.

Weaver finds himself involved in what would become the worlds first famous stock scandal, involving the South Sea Company, which was a kind of precursor of things to come in stocks. It was the first bubble stock, rising to incredible value and suddenly crashing down and taking a lot of fortunes with it.

Had the scandal actually been a more integral part of the plot, I might have liked the book better. and the ultimate resolution just wasnt all that compelling.

Still, this is an interesting, entertaining above-average read. Liss does a credible job of recreating the time period. I just would have liked to see more details about the South Sea Company Bubble scandal.
