A Time to Kill > Customer Review #1:
Its about Time!

Finally, A Time to Kill, John Grishams first novel, is a feature length movie. I just read this book, but I knew it was realeased in 1989. Im only thirteen, and this was my first Grisham book. In this story, Grisham hits us with a subject that most might not like to discuss: child rape. Ten-year old Tonya Hailey is brutally raped and almost killed by two drunken rednecks; perhaps the saddest and hardest part to get through with the addition of little Tonyas dream of her father running to get her. After this horrid crime is committed, Tonyas father, Carl Lee exacts vengeance on the two rednecks, and kills them. He is put on trial, and lawyer Jake Brigance is introduced to us. He takes Carl Lees case and must face his hated enemy, Rufus Buckley, in court. The days leading to the trial are filled with KKK threats, riots between blacks and the KKK, and several other chills and spills. Finally, the trial comes and the small town of Clanton, where the trial is held, is occupated by journalists, soldiers, KKK members, and thousands of blacks, as they all wait for the verdict on the edge of their seats..

A Time to Kill > Customer Review #2:
Suspense with a purpose

A Time to Kill by John Grisham is truly a 5-star book. Grisham tells the story of a young lawyer fighting for the life of a man who murdered his daughters rapists. Being a unique story line, any reader could be grabbed by a description but the book itself is what truly shines. Every detail is crisp and accurate. Grishams characters are incredibly life-like and he makes you pray for their best resolution. Every page makes you want to read the next. Every chapter brings you closer to the resolution but doubles the suspense. Once I started reading this book I could not put it down. Grisham truly shows that he is a master of courtroom suspense and that he knows what hes talking about. Along with having an incredible plot, Grisham also sends a great message with this book. He reminds people that even though slavery has been abolished in the U.S., racism still exists all over the world. Jake, the lawyer defending Carl Lee, sets out not only to get a boost in his career, but also to prove that a black man can recieve a fair trial in a predjudiced court.

A Time to Kill > Customer Review #3:
Good legal drama but not Grishams best.

The story in this first novel from John Grisham has enough clichés that the reader knows very early the books conclusion. Despite appearing at first to be Matlock-type story, theres enough action in both the main and side plots to keep the pages turning. The author clearly knows the rural South. One complaint about this and all Grishams book is when the plot is over the ends very suddenly. The rush to end leaves several side-plots unresolved or poorly resolved.
