Customer Review #1:
excellent, but perhaps somewhat rushed toward the end
John Irvings "A Widow for One Year" is right up there with other Irving classics, being at once witty, philosophical, comical, but nonetheless remotely realistic. Writing in a way that serves to bring the "dysfunctional family" a little closer to home, it is easy to recognize ones own idiosyncrocies and strange family dynamics in every chapter, may it be in Eddies inherent loveable wierdness, or Hannahs eccenttricies in love, or Ted Coles ignorant philandering. Also, Irving has re-created the older woman (Marion), as someone desirable, even in her advanced age, therefore allowing readers to re-examine how they percieve age and issues of what is considered sexy. Eddie is rather unique in that he remains enamoured of Marion, as a person, when in todays society, so much attention is given still to outward appearances. He is the epitome of true love, of a love not limited by time or age. Despite my obvoius love for the characters, I was just slightly confused by the last one hundred pages. It seemed that in the first section, there was quite an attention to detail, where in the subsequent parts, Irving appeared rushed, as if the story had gotten away from him somehow, and he needed to finish rather quickly. These criticisms notwithstanding, "A Widow for One Year" is by far one of the best summer reads yet, if not one for all seasons.

Stunning depth of character, almost all the time
The first thing that struck me about this book was the heart-stopping beauty of Marion, a central character near the beginning of the book. Its tough to get images that concrete in written words, but Irving handles it without strain. Its not just a physical description, its the way that the rest of the image is a bit darker, a bit fuzzier when Marion is in the picture, like Irving is using the depth of field in a photograph to highlight the subject, like her physical brilliance is so overwhelming that everything else is dimmed. Its not that Marions beauty is exactly central to the story, but the skill that Irving uses here seems to pop up all through the book. Its a carefully written book, in plain language, that competently and subtely handles overlapping undercurrents of the story. It feels like the characters drive their own actions, in their own voices, and intersect becuase they should, not because Irving is using them to move a plot forward. Hes clearly writing on a different level than than anything Ive read recently. I thought this was most apparent in the first section, and less so as the story went on. In a way, the more external elements drove the plot, especially the mildly outlandish ones, the less jaw-dropping the book was for me. There were a few bits that detracted from the flow for me, things that I think editors let Irving get away with because, well, hes Irving. He dwells an awful lot on a lead characters chest, for reasons that arent entirely clear to me, and everyone is both a writer and a reader so voracious that theyve all independently read every book relevant to the story. I left it at 5 stars, even with the flaws, because the good parts were so overpowering for me. In all, the flaws as I saw them were not enough to detract from the elegance of the story. I put this book down only because I didnt want to take it all in at once, didnt want it to be over. Recommended without reservation.

Disapointed
I want to say that first and foremost I am an avid reader, always giving a book a chance. After reading 90 pages of this book and waiting for it to show signs of hope I gave up. I was very surprised to see that it was a New York Times bestseller and notable book. I guess I should of read some of his better books first because after reading the reviews on this sight I saw that this was not one of John Irvings better books. I felt the book was very boring. I also felt that it had no plot, I just couldnt keep interest. Im sorry if I have offended any Irving fans, but I just found that the author gave to much information. I found myself wanting to skip paragraphs, which I never do.
