"Alma Mater" Doesnt Quite Make the Grade
Author Rita Mae Brown can always write a good story with a very colorful cast of chatracters. I must admit that I am a fan. However, this book is nothing more than a 260 page coming-out-novel. It reads like a screenplay for a Lifetime movie. (I must admit though that Ms. Brown can write a very hot [intimate] scene, better than any gay male writer Ive ever read). I thought the Wallace characters were a weak, comic reflief device that I could have done without. Also this story doesnt seem to read true with its lesbian content given that time period that the story takes place. In the book, the story takes place in the 1980s but reads with a late 1990s gay acceptability that I found hard to believe, again given the time period and the setting (Virginia). As for the story, there is a "surprise twist" with Chris, that is interesting but a little too late for me. The Epilogue ties things up "too neatly" and is also unbelievable. I was really surprised that Vic inst dating a guy again by the end of the book. I really didnt like Vic as a character. I never got a true sense from Vic when she starts to identify herself as lesbian. It is a little too "overnight," there is no build to the fact that she like women...

Disappointment
I love the Mrs. Murphy series, but Rita Mae Brown seems to flounder without the helping hand of Sneaky Pie. This book was just plain boring. There was a lot of supposedly "witty repartee" by Vics family and friends that had nothing to do with the story and appeared to be in there just to show how cute they all were - I found myself starting to skim every conversation in the book. The "quirky" characters came across as demented and strange, and I got tired of all the emphasis on how beautiful Vic and Chris and various others were - I think this was supposed to be some political statement that not all lesbians are masculine and ugly, but she kept making this point over and over, and it got tiresome. Vic made more long, tedious speeches than a politician, and at times the book felt more like a lecture than a story, with some sex scenes thrown in that were also surprisingly dull, given how steamy they were - in fact, very little seemed to happen. If this is your first Rita Mae Brown book, dont judge them all by this - the Mrs. Murphy series is a million times better.
