A good read!

Genealogist Carolina (Carly) May has been hired by the maiden aunt of Josh Quintrell (the sitting Governor of New Mexico) to complete a matriarchal genealogy of her family. lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt;What May finds upon her arrival is maybe the most dysfunctional family in American History. This is a story woven so tightly that you will refer to the genealogy tree included in the opening pages so many times it will wear out. lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt;It is immediately apparent that the recently deceased (murdered) patriarch of the family, U.S. Senator Andrew Jackson Quintrell IV, not only led a powerfully dominating and dictatorial life, but he has also held an iron sway over every facet of the lives of his family, employees and nearly everyone in Taos, New Mexico. lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt;The Senators dalliances with every female of the household, nefarious family alliances and illegitimate children abound. Everyone in Taos seems to be related somehow, but disinclined to talk. Carly quickly learns that the Senator was also the most prodigious philanderer she has ever encountered. At this point, the Governor forbids anyone from talking with Carly and strictly prohibits anything about his family from appearing in her finished work for Winifred Castillo. lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt;Shortly after her initial interviews, threats to her safety begin and Carly receives unsolicited help from Dan Duran, a local with a shade of darkness hanging over his head. lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt;Undeterred Dan Duran proves to have resources and knowledge that help Carly unravel the family history and bring to light unspeakable acts that cloud the family tree even further. lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt;The threats continue and Carly realizes that unless she pieces the genealogy together soon, her sources are becoming intimidated and the threats continue. Pressing forward despite the threats, Carly and Dan unravel the key to the primary deception that someone in the Quintrell family is determined to prevent from coming to light. lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt;Lowell has woven this web so tightly and precisely that your fingers will feel sticky as you turn the pages. Initially its tough to keep track of all the characters. The addition of the family tree in the first few pages is extremely helpful to keeping the names and relationships straight. lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt;Armchair Interviews says: The most dysfunctional family in American history...that could be an enticing read. lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt;

The downward sprial

Unfortunately, Elizabeth Lowell has gone from writing excellent romance, to good romantic suspense, and now to only average straight suspense. The rich characterization that has generated such a large fan-base has been abandoned in favor of tediously dull "thrillers" that are anything but. As a fan, I do feel sold out by her past few books. This particular book plods through boring subject matter, with little action and depressingly one dimensional characters. Authors do grow and change, but Lowells changes of late have not been for the better. After this book, I will no longer purchase her works, but wait for the library copies to free up.

Always Time to Die : A Novel > Customer Review #3:
who wrote this and what have you done with elizabeth?

Having read most of elizabeth lowell/ann maxwells books, I was severely disappointed with always time to die"...indeedy, quite an appropriate title. There was absolutely no life in this book. Im almost convinced she didnt write it. Would have given 0 stars, its that bad. lt;br /gt;The story has an overcomplicated, confusing plotline involving geneology, New Mexican land inheritance history, and a town full of unlikeable hispanos. Most of elizabeths books offer entertaining anecdotes, passionate, believable love stories, and interesting research on the part of the author. Thats why I cant understand this book - it was uninteresting, the pacing nonexistent, the romance forced, and the storyline boring. The characters, the dialog, the descriptions - not the elizabeth lowell I know and love! lt;br /gt;Im hoping that elizabeth does read these reviews, seriously, if this is par for any future books - save the trees by all means!
