Architects Guide to Feng Shui, Exploding the Myth > Customer Review #1:
Buyer Beware

Architects Beware.

This book is not a guide for the professional Architect to learn and practice Feng Shui. The title is deceiving as there is no real feng shui method in this book.

The basic principles of Five Elements are so superficially presented with very little application in real life, it makes one wonder if the author has ever studied, never mind practiced Feng Shui.

The author seems to be trying to convince people that Feng Shui is a science, it is not a science, at most is a Chinese Metaphysical science. The author claims to have studied and met with Feng Shui masters and she lists them in the beginning of the book. She does not state that they disagree on the most basic aspects of this "Scientific" Feng Shui. Why does she not mention this and discuss these controversial disagreements? She aggressively expresses her opinions of many other Feng Shui practitioners. This "Science" she so proudly promotes has caused arguments and "Feng Shui Wars" among the very teachers she has listed. lt;P>None of the most basic methods of Feng Shui are presented in this book. Not even fully developed basic principles. Why would an Architect want to spend hard earned money on this book that is trying to sell "Sizzle", but no "Substance".

If you want to learn Feng Shui buy books by Eva Wong, Joseph Yu, David Twicken, Larry Sang or Stephen Skinner. These authors present systems of Feng Shui that an Architect could study, learn and apply.

Architects save your money and time!

Architects Guide to Feng Shui, Exploding the Myth > Customer Review #2:
An interesting topic poorly presented

This book purports to rubbish non Classical feng shui but finishes up talking about green issues and electro-magnetic pollution. Neither of these things are part of Classical Chinese feng shui, which is about orientation, timing, direction and the movement of chi and water and these things effects on the people who live a specific location.
Cate Bramble falls into the trap of retailing New Age nonsense as if it were real feng shui, whilst chiding other people for doing just that.
It would have been helpful if the book contained real background material on Chinese building techniques and materials, like Evelyn Lip, but in a more organised way. Then the reader could see where feng shui applies to modern architecture. But Cate unfortunately does not do this in any depth.

Great Introduction to the Science of Feng Shui

These days, so many people still think feng shui is all about 3 legged toads and bagwa mirrors. Its so refreshing to have someone finally cutting to the chase and telling it like it is. I really like Cates definition of feng shui (p13), "Feng Shui can be understood as an attempt to re-establish a dialogue between humanitys deepest needs and our long-estranged, much abused planet". Im still taking my time to digest the many literary gems in this book. I have found it to be very thought provoking - great extensive bibliograhy. I especially like the sections on sustainablility and green issues. Id love to see Cate develop this topic in greater detail in a book all of its own. Still need to look up the definition of Memeplexes. The practical suggestions on reducing exposure to magnetic fields are very relevant in todays society. This book is a great introduction to the science of feng shui. I am already recommending it to clients and anyone else interested in finding out what feng shui is really all about.
