A Bend in the Road > Customer Review #1:
A great book

In comparison to his other books this is different from what he usually writes. I admit that the book is a little predictable but I didnt care about 3/4 of the books I read are predictable nowadays.

Anyway, let me start off with the characters. Theyre have thier own unique ways, but how they act is actually completely different from how they are described in the book. They describe Miles as a patient man and calm, but later in the book he doesnt seem that way, but when you read it youll understand why.

As you know, Sparks writes love stories that usually seem to take our heart away. Ive read all 5 of his books and I can easily say that this was better than his others in thought, but not better in emotion. This love story is action packed. I keep hoping for another book to touch me the way THE NOTEBOOK did or A WALK TO REMEMBER did.

Anyway it was okay, very discriptivc and he does get to the point in the story. While this was action packed, in the end it leaves you feeling apathy towards the characters. I wouldve enjoyed this book more (and given it five stars) if the characters were more interesting and werent so dul all the time.

While the overall story is good and the story plays out great, its a little fast at times and completely misses one point (I mean some of the events in the story were completely forgotten and left me asking questions.), it usually did turn out to be okay in the end. Another thing that wouldve made this book better is if he couldve focused more on the characters. I mean more than just dialouge. Unless a character was angry at another character you had no idea how they felt or what they wanted.

Overall the book is an entertaing read with a few flaws here and there, but the book itself is a good read.

Hooray!! Finally a Nicholas Sparks Book I Loved

Generally speaking when I read a new author, I use a three book rule. If Im not real happy after reading the first book I will always try another book by the author, sometimes even two books to see if I feel any differently. Then and only then do I allow myself to say I wont read the author again. But sometimes I even go the final distance and try a fourth book to make up my mind. And it may very well be this book which makes me a loyal fan and future reader of the author.

What I just described above is exactly what happened to me concerning Nicholas Sparks and his books. While many readers loved The Notebook, Message in the Bottle and A Walk to Remember (in my opinion a rehash of Love Story by Erich Segal), none of these books even remotely moved me as they did so many other readers.

And so I passed on reading The Rescue and never expected to pick up another Sparks book again, but then a funny thing happened to me while browsing the library shelves. Seeking a comfort book shortly after 9/11, I found msyelf looking at A Bend in the Road, thinking Id try another Saprks book. Over the next two days I literally gulped down the pages and loved every word, characters and description. Finally, now I can shout out loud that I read a Nicholas Sparks book I loved.

The story of A Bend in the Road begins two years after Miles Ryans high school sweetheart and wife dies in a hit and run accident. The responsible party has never been found and looking for this person consumes Miles who is also the towns deputy sheriff. Miles isnt the only one who misses Missy Ryan. There is also their 6 year old son Jonah who cant imagine what happened to his mother when he was so young. Now as each day passes, Miles is more and more determined to find the man or woman responsible for this tragedy.

Then Sarah Andrews, newly divorced and transplanted to the area, becomes Jonahs teacher. Discovering that he is weak in elementary skills she offers to tutor Joanh after school. This puts Sarah directly in Miles path. At first reluctant to become involved in a realtionship with a woman who he is attracted to, Miles tries to steer clear of Sarah. But eventually their mutual interest in each other finds them dating and pursuing more than a friendship because of Jonah. Then as their relationship grows stronger, the past comes back to haunt the two of them. And all the while I was left furiously turning pages while sitting on the edge of my seat wondering as to the outcome of the book.

I truly loved this book and have learned a valuable lesson from reading this title. Just as we were taught never to judge a book by its cover, I also now understand why its important to sometimes give an author several chances before dismissing them entirely. For one may find, as I did, that it is the very next read which may be that special book that they will always remember. Hopefully, it wont take four other books till I find the one I really love.

Listening is to believe....

I had the audio unabridged tapes. It just blew my mind. When
Miless wife is the victim of a hit and run he is just too hurt.
Then when he meets his sons teacher named Sarah, his life seems to be on the right track to happiness. But when the secret is revealed Miles does not know if there is a future for
him and Sarah.

The readers of this book made it seem so real, I was near tears.
I have read: The Notebook
The Rescue
and I will say they are all excellent reading. If you like drama with romanace Nicholas Sparks has the best.

Try it you might like it.
