Poignant tribute to dogs past and present
This was one of my rare forays into nonfiction; I almost didnt read it-I pick up a lot of nonfiction books with good intentions-but Im glad I did. I wish I could write like that about my dogs. It truly moved me, especially his account of life with his two big yellow labs, Stanley and Julius. To consider your dogs like that, to write about them so lovingly and thoroughly, its such a great tribute to them that they, unfortunately, will never know about. To go from such tranquil animals as big, lazy labs to hyperkinetic dogs as border collies is no easy feat. I couldnt do it. Certainly, after reading about border collies I know that they are not suited to my temperament. But I admire Katz for taking on that challenge. One of the most moving parts for me was the description of Stanleys euthanasia. I couldnt agree with his philosophy more and I will do the same for my dogs when it is their time to go (tearing up just thinking about this). For a dog not to be able to run, play to just be a dog and enjoy his quintessential dogness is just no life. I cant imagine not having dogs in my life-this book reaffirmed that.

Customer Review #2:
Heartwarming and heartfelt book not just for dog lovers.
If you are thinking about bringing a dog into your life, do yourself a favor, read this book. If you already have a dog or two you will truly appreciate the stories Katz has about his lovable labs and his quirky border collies. As one pondering the purchase of a border collie, this book gave me fabulous insight into the breed, owning a dog and the special bond dog owners have with their pets. But it also provides a lot of insight into people, relationships and life. This is not just a story about dogs. It truly reflects the new relationship people have with pets and the world we live in. It is a heart warming story, sad at times but always insightful.

Midlife crisis for Katz: Dogs suffer
Rest in peace, Julius and Stanley. Too bad your master couldnt have shown you the loyalty you showed him in your old age. But then, you were dogs, he was human -- and an expert on dogs, at that. You didnt have a prayer when he brought in the bratty hell dog. And one of them wasnt enough to keep him interested. He was bored with you guys. Had I known your plight, I would have dog-napped you. You could have lolled around with me and my Springer (were both unemployed!)and lived out your last years with dignity. Talk about dog stress. You had it in spades just at the time of your life when you didnt deserve it--your golden years. Maybe in the next life, Katz will be a dog and you can be his master!
